Note: Due to limited time, not all the
contents on student handouts will be covered or covered in a great detail.
You can find some details regarding the drop-out contents and some of my
personal opinions / individual recommandations on the computer related stuff.
PC Maintenance and Security:
- Disk Defragmenter: a disk (HDD) management tool.
Start --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Defragmenter
After defrag, your computer responds faster, files open faster, programs
launch faster ...
What is "defrag" anyway? I will detail it out in class. ==> This is an easy and effective way to tune up your system
- Start Up programs: annoying ICQ, MSN take up so long
when booting into your OS.
MSN: open MSN -> Tools -> Options -> Preferences
-> uncheck the "run MSN when windows starts". Most messenger programs
can be prevented from auto run. Another place to
check: Start -> Programs -> Startup: delete the programs shortcuts.
Some tough ones: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Information
-> Software Environment -> Startup Programs : modify registry key to
disable them from auto launching (Warning: registry change error could
cause serious system problems.)
Services: disable some Windows services you don't need to speed up Windows booting.
- Anti Virus: this is a MUST. Norton AntiVirus (NAV),
McAfee. You should update your Virus Definition files constantly, so
leave the auto update setting on to have the AnitVirus programs check
their servers automatically for new updates. Have real time protection
on.
- Firewall: big topic, check out internet for more knowledge.
Hardware / Software firewall, hardware example: the built-in firewall
in your router; software example: zone alarm
- Desktop cleanup: don't stuff your desktop area, group
the program shortcuts in Start -> Programs to shorten the pop-out list.
Delete unwanted files, and empty your recycle bin.
Upgrade, Buy New, Desktop VS Laptop
- Upgrade: do NOT try to upgrade your old P2, low-cpu P3
to do video editing sort heavy job <==> tune your Civic Si to beat up
BMW M5?
Question: is it worthwhile to upgrade >> depends on your needs, and the
candidate system. E.g. my mom use it for email and internet, yes add some
ram to speed up your P2, and it's good enough for your mom.
Areas for upgrade:
- #1 add memory: RAM is cheap now -> instant performance gain (could be BIG gain)
- #2 pop in a larger hard drive -> more storage at a low cost
- #3 CD / DVD writer -> back up your stuff: security and save your disk space
- #4 LCD monitor -> space saving, less radiation, good for your eyes
- #5 keyboard/mouse/speakers -> comfort on operation, enhance your PC-home-theatre / MP3 no-stop broadcasting experience
- Buy New: brand name, e.g. Dell -->no setup, quality
services, not expensive on low end
noname clone: if you know hardware well, reliable retailers, unlimited
customization.
- Desktop VS Laptop: budget, what is it FOR? Money for
what you need, not for the cool effects. A laptop should last 3 to 5 years. Portability: too heavy, too thick.
Handy Software
The following software programs are mostly freeware and shareware,
you can download them from this site by right clicking --> Save target as
- HardCopy Pro: a
neat screen capture program, supports bmp, jpg, gif, before saving, you
can crop the captured image.
- Net Transport:
freeware, download manager, featuring multi-threads downloading, real
media streaming download, site browsing, and proxy server. More on multiple
threads download and using download manager in class (if I have time :))
- Norton AntiVirus: everybody knows it, the No.
1 in AntiVirus appliactions. Just remember to update your virus definition
file, or better leave the auto update feature untouched (by default, it's
on). I can not provide download for this one. It's not free.
- Zone Alarm:
software firewall, this is the free version. It also has Plus and Pro
version which are not free (you can find their trial versions at www.download.com).
Zone Alarm monitors your internet security, assigns internet access permissions
to the programs running on your computer, and blocks attacks. Easy setup,
friendly user tutorial for beginners.
- RealOne player:
a must for playing back real media (audio and video), Real Player cooks
everything all together, from media play back, internet browsing, to ripping
CDs and convert MP3, to burn CDs, and handle DVDs. The version provided
here is the free basic version, and I believe this is what you really
need. Besides the excellent job it does on playing back real audio/video
(hey! this is what it's made for), the built-in cd-ripping/mp3 conversion
tool is very neat. There are tons mp3-making softwares, and most of them
are free, but the function from the RealOne player is quite above the
par, performance wise and user-friendliness wise. Speedy ripping and converting,
fully configurable conversion settings, straight forward operations.
- WMP Classic: WMP
== Windows Media Player << what is the big deal about this, it's bundled
with any Windows operating system. This is a modified WMP 6.4 version,
with the classic skin. It has many more functions than the original 6.4,
and can also handle DVDs. If you are an XP user or upgraded your WMP to
7 or 8, you lose the old good 6.4, with this one you can again play back
your media files with clean interface and fast launching.
- Nero: CD buring tool. This is not freeware, you
can download its fully-functioning 30-day trial from www.download.com.
- ws-ftp:
very neat ftp application. FTP: transfer files from, say, your website,
to, say, your local computer, and the other way around as well. FTP program
is a must for uploading your web pages to your site.
- Dreamweaver:
A very powerful webpage editor, the beauty of Dreamweaver is that the HTML codes it generates are
very similar to the ones hand coded, in another word, NO JUMBO CODES, this is something MS FrontPage
misses the big time. Dreamweaver also comes with a quality tutorial, and the entire install file is only 20 some
MB. Find the trial version of Dreamweaver 4 or Dreamweaver MX (these 2 versions are similar) from their maker's site

Assignment 4 FAQ Answers
- Once you launch ws-ftp, you will see a window
called Session Property, click "new" button, then enter the info as following:
for profile name, you can put anything, and this is the name for this ftp
connection.
put "members.rogers.com" at host field (no quotes), then your username and
password you came out for this account during activation.
- Save (you should say transfer or upload here) your finished
html pages to the root directory of your website this is where you just
log into your Rogers site.
- Did you change your Primary Password while activating a new
email/webspace something. If you still can not log in, you have to call
Rogers' customer service (1-888-288-4663), they
can reset your primary password.
- Did you name your index page (the webpage with links to your
assignment pages) index.htm, if you did, and upload this index.htm to the
root directory of your website (when ws-ftp just log into the remote site,
and that's the root directory of your site).
- Check the Rogers help site -
http://www.rogershelp.com/help/home.shtml - for configuring outlook express and other troubleshooting tips
- To create a link (hyperlink):
- the html way: if you want phrase "assignment 1" on index.htm
to link to the assignment 1 page - a1.htm, your html code for this
link should look like this:
<a href="a1.htm">assignment 1</a>,
and a1.htm should be in the same directory where your index.htm
is at the Rogers site.
- the Dreamweaver way: in the Design View area (bottom
half screen), highlight words "assignemnt 1", then put a1.htm
in the Link field at the floating Property Window,
and you should see the html code in the Code View (upper
half screen) area will change accordingly (showing the same code
mentioned above).
- the MS Word way: highlight "assignment 1" on your word
document, clcik the Insert Hyperlink button (a globe with
a chain) or you can click Insert >> Hyperlink from
menu or you can just press Ctrl K, the Edit Hyperlink
window pops out, put a1.htm
in the Address field, click OK. And you know your a1.htm
will be uploaded to where this index.htm is on Rogers site.
- Sure you can use non-Rogers site, but, besides posting
your homework on a website, I also want you to learn how to create HTML
pages and publish (using ftp) them to a web site, NOT just clicking
those Page Builder buttons provided by the free websites like Geocities,
Kimo, etc. I would really like to see you guys hand craft some real HTML pages and upload them to a web site.
- The yellow Under Construction page is the default index.htm from Rogers, you are supposed to
create your own index.htm page with links to the assignment pages, and upload YOUR index.htm to OVERWRITE the Rogers'
index.htm, hence you will see YOUR index page once get onto your site
