一向鼓勵多元文化教育,大多倫多市教育局特於市內各小學設置三十七種祖裔語言課程(現改名為國際語言課程),有二十五個學生報名即開班,免費提供該市居民從幼稚園至八年級,一週三小時的課程,受惠學生達三萬人(另有高中學分班)。為了讓不同語言都有相同的進度及學習方向,教育局因此參考日間主流教育課程,擬定了「國際語言課程綱要」。本人曾擔任高年班的編寫工作,先以中英文寫就,再由其他語裔教師據以翻譯為其語文教授。 下面所列即為大多倫多教育局國際語言之課程綱要。如中文學校的華語文教材能配合主流課程系統,將有相輔相成、事半功倍之效: 由於教學單元主題、 活動、 研討及作業 (Project) 俱已由佔盡「天時」(上課時數長)、「地利」(教具設備經費充足)、「人和」(科班出身)的日間教師主導,中文學校可專注於相同主題之中國語文部分的轉換及文化異同的教授,以彌補中文課堂時數不足的缺點;而學生亦可因此搭配加強學習功效,學來更系統化、更實用及別具意義,對中英雙語的靈活應用會更見實效。
